Photo of the week: The view from Welcome Flat Hut

Department of Conservation —  26/11/2014

Today’s photo of the week is from Welcome Flat Hut on the Copland Track in Westland Tai Poutini National Park.

Who wouldn’t want to wake up to this epic view?

The walk to Welcome Flat Hut showcases Westland’s spectacular forest, river and mountain scenery, while natural hot pools at the hut are an added attraction for weary adventurers.

About 4500 people stay at this hut each year and an upgrade to the hut last year saw the addition of a spacious new lounge and dining area, new fireplace and four new bunkrooms.

This is a fantastic place on the West Coast. I visited in winter one year so not so many people to have to share the experience with. Fabulous sitting out under the stars surrounded by huge snow capped mountains, soaking in natural hot pools – magic!
