Their prize trip to Piopiotahi Marine Reserve in Milford Sound was blessed with the most incredible weather and they spent an amazing couple of days cruising the sound, flying over snow capped peaks and kayaking with dolphins!

Laura Wakelin, who works within DOC championing the marine component of our partnership with Air New Zealand, tagged along on the Piopiotahi cruise run by Southern Discoveries. She says she was particularly fond of the crayfish spotting and took some extra happy snaps for us.

Milford Sound is known as one of the wettest locations in New Zealand, with sunny days filling a mere sliver of the year! The marine reserve is still stunning on grey cloudy days, but when it’s bathed in sunlight, it simply takes your breath away.

It takes your breath away.

Milford Sound is at her best in the wetter weather – the wetter the better. The dramatic landscape cries out for the rain to showcase her true beauty. I always describe Milford as more like being in another world not just another country. Simply stunning.
