Today’s photo of the week is of a Haast tokoeka kiwi chick at the Willowbank Wildlife Reserve in Christchurch.
A shy, mountain-loving bird, the Haast tokoeka is one of our rarest kiwi. More than half the known population of about 300 birds live in an actively managed area of the Haast Range, where the battle continues to save these birds from extinction.
The Haast kiwi team is currently looking for two interns to help them during the upcoming summer field season.
Interns will receive on-the-job training to develop their wildlife management skills. As confidence and skills increase, interns will undertake tasks by themselves. By the end of the summer interns will be trained kiwi rangers.
More information about this opportunity can be found on the DOC website.

Oh to have no set plans and be able to do this for a summer – what an awesome experience.
