Photo of the week: Mahuia the kiwi

Department of Conservation —  07/10/2015

Today’s photo of the week is of one of the newest kiwi chicks to enter the world.

October is Save Kiwi Month, a national campaign led by Kiwis for kiwi. Throughout the month they will urge New Zealanders to join the fight to save our national icon.

This kiwi chick hatched at Rainbow Springs in Rotorua on September 12. It is called ‘Mahuia’, after the rapids on the Whakapapanui River in Tongariro National Park.

There are heaps of ways to get involved in Save Kiwi Month. You could join the Quest for Kiwi or hold a Great Kiwi Morning Tea at your school or workplace.
