Photo of the week: Ohau Stream seal pup

Department of Conservation —  29/06/2016

Today’s photo of the week is of a young New Zealand fur seal pup at Ohau Stream, Kaikoura.

Ohau Stream is a popular walk to a waterfall and pool where juvenile seals spend short periods of time away from their mothers from May until October.

DOC is currently looking for volunteers to help manage visitors to the Ohau Point waterfall and Point Keen near Kaikoura.

Seal volunteers help ensure visitors have an enjoyable experience. They spend time talking to visitors, answering questions about the seals, and helping people stay safe around them.

More information about becoming a seal volunteer can be found on the DOC website.

Very popular spot for our visitors but great to hear you’re looking volunteers to help ensure the pups safety too. Humans can get overexcited at the prospect of seeing wildlife up close……
